LESSONS

Joey specializes in music lessons for piano, saxophone, composition, and production. He teaches all levels and ages, and has been teaching music lessons for over 14 years. Joey has been playing the saxophone and piano for over 24 years. In addition to working as a saxophone coach at Westview and Mt. Carmel High School, Joey has taught college level courses in electronic music and music production at SDSU. He currently works as the music director at New Summit Charter Academy in Colorado Springs, and is also an adjunct professor in music at Mesa college in San Diego, where he teaches Piano, the History of Rock Music, World Music, and the History of Jazz. Joey also composes, records, and produces electro-acoustic music and all students will have the ability to get professional quality recordings of their music on request. Joey has a very adaptable approach when he teaches. He understands that all students have very different learning styles and interests. His broad range of musical training allows his students to learn many styles and genres of music while understanding fundamentals like theory and technique. Students will be empowered to hone their craft as an instrumentalist, composer, producer, artist, or all of the above.

Virtual Lessons and Recitals

Joey also specializes in providing convenient and effective online music lessons. These lessons allow students and parents to manage their often chaotic schedules with more ease. Joey uses multiple camera angles and professional audio equipment to ensure the students are receiving clear instructions and examples. Virtual lessons have clear advantages over in person lessons. For example, there is no transition time switching places on the piano bench. Joey is able to provide clear instant feedback to students with smart camera angles and screen sharing, and provide links to sheet music, additional online resources, and instructional videos. Joey has taught students all over the country online, and holds “virtual” recitals a few times a year. Students are able to participate in the recital by submitting a performance video that Joey edits into a final recital video. The students, parents, and their families are then able to view the performances at their convenience.

Testimonies

“Most trustworthy sweet, intelligent, amazingly accomplished young man! We’ve used Joey for the past few years to teach my then 5, 8 and 10 year olds to play piano. He even sings with my little American Idol wannabe. All can play and read music now! We love Joey!!!”
— Kathryn Jackson
“Joey has been amazing with both my young kids. He encourages them and motivates them to practice and improve, but understands and adjusts to their moods when they’re having an off day. I’m very impressed and pleased with his knowledge of music theory and his teaching style”
— Susan Gilmore
“Joey has been instructing my son in alto, baritone and tenor sax for four years. He is a thoughtful, talented, professional and dedicated teacher. He understands his students needs and tailors his lessons to suit them. With regular practice and excellent coaching my sons playing has improved tremendously. I would highly recommend Joey to anyone considering music lessons - youth or adult.”
— Mark Elliot
“He really tries to focus on the student’s progress and teaches each student fundamental theory in order for them to understand the music and its purpose.”
— Hunter Anderson
“I really wish there was a 6th star in this rating system, used solely for a professional who brings both passion and genius to his work. Joey Earnest is the real thing. He, unlike the majority, deserves a 6th star. He is an outstanding musician, in sax and piano, in his own right, but he also is incredibly patient with our 12 year old son who is bright but not dedicated to saxophone (yet). I am a college level professor and I can clearly see Joey has the “gift” of a great music teacher. Thank you Joey for coming into our family’s lives.”
— Christopher Scott
“Joey has been my son’s piano teacher for the past 3 1/2 years. I Highly recommend him!! My son has made more progress with him than I ever dreamed possible.

Joey listened to my desire to utilize a non-traditional teaching approach and he not only understood what I was looking for, he embraced it. Now, my son has a pretty extensive repertoire of very entertaining songs he can play at a moment’s notice and it’s a joy to listen to him practice and bring music into our home. He’s learning stuff now that I thought he wouldn’t be able to touch for years to come. Joey is the Man!!”
— Jon Doyle
“Joey’s an excellent teacher-he helped me get superior scores on my solo piece when I performed it. Definitely would consider for work on a solo piece for saxophone.”
— Nicholas Johnson
“Excellent musician and teacher. I’ve known Joey for almost 10 years now. I am also a music teacher and I am always learning new things from him. He has taught at the university level all the way down to the elementary level. Regardless of age or experience, Joey’s helpfulness and patience knows no bounds. I highly recommend Joey as his knowledge of music and teaching far exceeds what is typical of a music teacher.”
— Nakul Tiruviluamala
“Joey has taught our son to play the piano for 4 years now and we can only sing his praises. Our son was 5 years old when he started taking lessons and he still likes to play, thanks to Joey’s down to earth approach and way of explaining music. If you are looking for a reliable, friendly, patient and professional music teacher, Joey is the right choice!”
— Louise Butler
“Joey is a gifted musician and even more gifted teacher. My 14 year old has been taking piano lessons with Joey for about eighteen months now. We lived in San Diego for a year and my son started in person with him for close to ten months. Joey’s teaching style and connection with my son was so effective that we decided to continue lessons via Skype. My son is a highly gifted kid for whom lots of learning comes easily. Not so with music, but he is inspired and motivated by Joey. Joey’s ability to meet the learner where they are and push them beyond their normal comfort zone is impressive. I am very, very glad that we found him. Joey’s teaching style is engaging and encouraging while holding the learner accountable to practice, development, and growth. I wholeheartedly recommend him for both in person and online lessons.”
— Latha Poonamallee
“Joey has been teaching piano to our now 8 and 11 yo boys for more than a year. Although my kids aren’t musical per say and don’t tend to practice during the week, thanks to Joey their piano skills are impressive! Without ignoring the theory, Joey was able to adapt his teaching style to their personalities and has taught them to play their favorite songs. My younger son was so excited to to learn Fall out Boy’s “Centuries” he would run to the piano to practice! Both boys are clearly proud of their accomplishments and love to show them off to their friends. Thank you Joey!”
— Nina Kottler
“We love joey!!! He’s a great teacher because he teaches the way that is right for the student. He comes to our house twice a week to teach our 5-year-old son, who wasn’t particularly interested in learning the songs from the book, scales, etc, so Joey changed it up to make it fun for him by focusing on making up songs and improvising (while still sneaking in some of the technical stuff). Our son looks forward to his lessons so much! Joey is obviously a masterful pianist and could teach at any skill level.”
— Aaron Wiesenfeld
“Joey has been a very patient, knowledgeable piano teacher to my boys. He speaks their language and engages them. I selected Joey to be my boys piano teacher because I wanted someone who would draw them in and enjoy piano, which he does.”
— Alison Lee
“My grandson recently started lessons with Joey. He looks forward to his lessons and likes Joey very much. When a child is 4 1/2 it needs to be fun as well as instructional, and I’m so pleased with Joey’s approach in both those regards. They’ve gotten off to a good start, and I’m hoping that Matias’s skills, interest and knowledge will deepen. I have the impression that Joey sees it as a process and, though Joey is young, he has patience and the understanding that teaching such a young child is not necessarily a straight line. I believe deeply in the importance of music in a child’s (anyone’s) life. Thank you, Joey, for being Matias’s teacher!”
