Flow

by Joey Earnest

2019

Flow is a fusion of genres and an exploration of compositional and timbral ideas. The main intention of the project is to create fresh sounds that inspire curiosity and new thought pathways. It is an attempt to push the artistic boundaries of EDM and create new and interesting sonic landscapes.

Monkey in a Coconut Tree

by Joey Earnest

2016

A note about the intro (PhiX174):

Heart (Phix174) is a combination of two compositions. The intro (PhiX174) features an intense soundscape in which every click and pop has been composed out in music notation and translated from a string of viral DNA. The specific phage virus is PhiX174. The specific string of DNA this song translates, is for the "H protein". It is known as the DNA pilot protein. It is needed for DNA injection and is also called the minor spike protein. There are twelve copies in the procapsid and virion. The score is a representation of one copy of the protein. The top line represents the DNA Nucleotide Data (ATCG) and the bottom line represents the corresponding amino acid that every three nucleotides (or codon) create. The piece is to be executed on a computer, using 12 virtual instruments at the speed of 1000 bpm. The recording that corresponds to this piece uses low bit sounds for the virtual instruments that start the piece at random points, eventually melting into a complex sonic texture. The texture acts as an introduction to an electro-acoustic piece of music I composed, called "Heart." Heart uses real samples of the human heart as a kick drum sound. Many experts believe that viruses were what started life on Earth. They are essentially bits of genetic information that are found literally everywhere. Scientists are still just scraping the surface of understanding the full effect of viruses on life on Earth.
